Chronograph Watch Explained: What All Those Dials Actually Do
Share
Chronograph watches look complex — multiple subdials, extra pushers, technical markings around the bezel. But the function is simpler than it appears. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is a Chronograph?
A chronograph is simply a watch with a built-in stopwatch function. The word comes from Greek: chronos (time) + grapho (write). The main timekeeping function runs independently from the stopwatch — you can start and stop the stopwatch without affecting what time the watch displays.
The Pushers
Chronograph watches have two extra pushers (buttons) on the case side:
- Top pusher (2 o'clock position): Start and stop the chronograph
- Bottom pusher (4 o'clock position): Reset the chronograph to zero
Reading the Subdials
Most chronographs have two or three subdials. The most common configuration:
- Center seconds hand: The main chronograph hand — sweeps when timing is active
- 30-minute counter: Tracks elapsed minutes up to 30
- 12-hour counter: Tracks elapsed hours up to 12
- Running seconds: The permanent small seconds subdial, showing that the watch is running
The Tachymeter
Many chronograph bezels have a tachymeter scale — the numbers running around the outer edge of the dial or bezel. This calculates speed over a known distance. Time a subject traveling one mile or one kilometer, then read the tachymeter at where the second hand stopped. The number shown is the speed in units per hour. Useful for racing, but mostly a design element on dress chronographs.
Do You Need a Chronograph?
Honestly, most people don't use the stopwatch function regularly. But that's not really the point. Chronographs are chosen for their visual complexity — the additional subdials create a richer, more technical-looking dial that communicates a certain seriousness. If you spend any time in boardrooms, at events, or simply enjoy the engineering aesthetic, a chronograph earns its place on your wrist.
NIBOSI Chronographs
NIBOSI offers several fully functional chronograph models with genuine start/stop/reset function. The men's collection includes multiple chronograph options at accessible price points — delivering the visual complexity and functional stopwatch capability without the four-figure price tag typically associated with this complication.
