Waterproof vs Water Resistant Watch: What ATM Ratings Really Mean

Watch water resistance ratings are one of the most misunderstood specifications in the industry. "Water resistant" means almost nothing on its own. The ATM number tells the real story — and it's not what most people expect.

The Important Truth: No Watch Is "Waterproof"

The watch industry has moved away from the word "waterproof" because no watch is truly permanent-waterproof. Seals degrade over time, temperature changes affect pressure, and no mechanical device can guarantee indefinite water protection. The correct term is "water resistant to X ATM."

What ATM Actually Means

ATM stands for atmospheres of pressure. 1 ATM = approximately 10 meters of water pressure. But here's the critical detail: static laboratory pressure and real-world dynamic pressure are completely different. A dive into a pool creates far more impact pressure than the rated depth suggests.

3ATM (30 meters rated)

Suitable for: Splashing, rain, hand washing
Not suitable for: Swimming, showering, any immersion
This is the rating on most dress watches, including most NIBOSI models. Don't swim with these.

5ATM (50 meters rated)

Suitable for: Swimming in shallow water, snorkeling
Not suitable for: Diving, high-impact water sports
This is the minimum for a genuine swimming watch.

10ATM (100 meters rated)

Suitable for: Swimming, recreational diving, water sports
Not suitable for: Scuba diving (needs 20ATM/200m)
Sport watches typically target this rating.

20ATM+ (200 meters rated)

Suitable for: Scuba diving

The Shower Question

Many people shower with their watches. Whether this damages the watch depends on temperature as much as pressure. Hot water causes the rubber gaskets to expand and lose their seal effectiveness over repeated cycles. If your watch is rated at 3ATM, showering regularly will reduce its water resistance over time. If you must shower with a watch, 5ATM minimum is more realistic.

Maintaining Water Resistance

Water resistance is not permanent. Gaskets age and degrade. For any watch where water resistance matters, have the seals checked annually by a watchmaker — it's a minor service that costs very little and can prevent expensive movement damage.

For Everyday Wear

If you're not swimming or diving, 3ATM is completely sufficient for daily life. All NIBOSI models rated at 3ATM will handle rain, hand washing, and the occasional splash without any concern. Just don't swim in them — and you'll have no issues.
